The Fishermen’s Trail, a renowned hiking route widely regarded as “one of the best coastal trails in the world,” has now extended its reach to the city of Lagos. This newly demarcated section connects Burgau to Lagos, traversing the picturesque Praia da Luz and Ponta da Piedade, renowned for their exceptional natural beauty and landscapes, as affirmed by the Lagos City Council.
This segment constitutes one of the 13 stages comprising the Fishermen’s Trail, a 226.5-kilometer route that forms part of the broader Rota Vicentina network. The trail winds its way “always by the sea,” following well-trodden paths utilized by locals to access the beaches and skirting along the cliffs. While the terrain presents some physical challenges, it offers an unparalleled immersion in the invigorating sea breeze and the untamed beauty of nature.
The establishment of this Lagos section of the hiking route received financial backing from the Lagos City Council.Furthermore, the council has approved a cooperation agreement with the Rota Vicentina – Association for the Promotion of Nature Tourism in the Alentejo and Vicentina Coast, ensuring the effective management and maintenance of the trail.
As part of this collaboration, the council will allocate 3,600 euros to the association to support ongoing maintenance efforts, encompassing the upkeep of marking posts, signage, directional indicators, and informative billboards/outdoors.
“The collaboration agreement also seeks to solidify the project as an instrument of social, environmental, economic, and cultural sustainability for the region, particularly for the municipality of Lagos,” emphasized the council.
The overarching Rota Vicentina project envisions transforming the region into an internationally acclaimed destination for responsible tourism, particularly in the active and nature-based segments. It aims to foster regional unity among businesses, institutions, and communities, rallying them around a responsible and sustainable initiative. Additionally, it seeks to attract new markets, stimulate economic growth in the region, and raise awareness among local communities and visitors alike regarding the paramount importance of preserving the region’s natural and cultural heritage while promoting sustainable development throughout the area.
