How to get to Lagos by road out of Lisbon?

The fastest route

The Faster Route (A2 Toll Road):

  • This route is the fastest way to get from Lisbon to Lagos, taking approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes without stopping.
  • However, it is also the more expensive route, as you will need to pay tolls along the way. The total cost of tolls can vary depending on the type of vehicle you are driving, but it is typically around €25. You can learn everything about toll roads in Portugal here
  • To take the A2 toll road, follow these instructions:
    • Start your journey in Lisbon and head west towards the A2 toll road. You can take the IC15 or the A5 to get to the A2.
    • Once on the A2, follow the signs for Faro/Algarve/Lisboa.
    • Keep left to stay on the A2 and follow signs for E01/Algarve/Alcácer toll road.
    • Take exit 15 to merge onto the A22 toll road towards Lagos/Portimão/Albufeira toll road.
    • Take exit 1 towards N125/Lagos/Vila do Bispo toll road.
    • Continue onto the N120 toll road.
    • At the roundabout, take the second exit and stay on Av. das Comunidades Portuguesas/N125.
    • Follow Av. das Comunidades Portuguesas until you reach Lagos.

The Slower rote

The Slower Route (N120 National Road):

  • This route is slower than the A2 toll road, taking approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes without stopping.
  • However, it is also the cheaper route, as there are no tolls to pay. N120 national road Portugal 
  • To take the N120 national road, follow these instructions:
    • Start your journey in Lisbon and head south towards Setúbal. You can take the A2 or the IC13 to get there.
    • Once in Setúbal, take the ferry across the Sado River to Tróia. In Setubal you can have the traditional octopus or the fried calamares. See the Schedule and prices here. Only Ferrys will take your car from Setubal to Troia or vice versa.
    • From Tróia, follow the N120 south along the coast all the way to Lagos.

Whichever route you choose, be sure to:

  • Allow plenty of time for your journey, especially if you are traveling during peak season.
  • Take breaks every few hours to avoid getting tired behind the wheel.
  • Be aware of the speed limits and traffic regulations in Portugal.
